20 Feb 1974 - Strawbs - Ultra Sonic Studios, NYC

Personnel were:
Dave Cousins (gtrs, vcls)
Dave Lambert (gtrs, vcls)

John Hawken (kybds)
Rod Coombes (dms, vcls)
New World
Lay Down
Autumn
Out In The Cold/Round And Round
Benedictus
Just Love
Why
The River/Down By The Sea

This concert was taped in a New York Studio and has appeared on a bootleg CD as In Search Of The Heroine. The concert is plagued with almost every kind of PA trouble you can imagine, including abandoning an attempt to play "Hero and Heroine" because John Hawken's mellotron packs up. Instead they play an extended version of "Why" which is in fact the full version of the song "Why And Wherefore". The song was broken up and appeared out of order on two single B-sides: "Why" on the B-side of "Hero and Heroine" and "And Wherefore" on the B-side of "Shine On Silver Sun". The full version also features a middle section with two bridging verses.

Again, the cover is wholly wrong! The front is a nice shot of Dave Cousins playing banjo, around 1972 (the other photos on the inner sleeve are from the same period - one features Hud on acoustic guitar). On the back cover, there is at least a photo of the Cousins/Lambert/Cronk/Hawken/Coombes line-up, but it was taken as a promo photo for the Ghosts album!!

Most of the tracks (except New World and Just Love) in this set appear on the Luxembourg CD Heroes Are Forever, and some of the tracks (i.e. not those which are performed in the 1973 concert) appear on the Strawbs In Concert Windsong CD release. Prince And Princess, despite cover information which suggests the gig is the one bootlegged on In Search Of The Heroine (see above for details of that concert), is actually this concert, presumably a copy of Disc 2 of Heroes Are Foerver. There is also a BBC Transcription Disc of this concert, from which, presumably, the Luxembourg CD was made.

Pete Cusumano writes:

The following set list is from the Riviera Theatre in North Chicago, late 1976 (Nov or Dec). I've kept this tattered piece of paper that I wrote down the set list on for 23 years and am astonished I have someone to tell about it. The Strawbs rarely played Chicago, but had some very enthusiastic fans there, so when they played this date the crowd was very welcoming. and boy they delivered! a very long set with Dave Cousins' amiable chit-chat between songs.
