BRIAN AND SCRATCH MUSIC NIGHTS
===============================

Many of you may already have been to the Red Lion in Shepperton as Brian and Cathryn ended a tour at a nearby school a few years ago, and then everyone adjourned to the Red Lion for a post gig tipple. The pub closed last year but has recently re-opened under new management. Brian Willoughby and a friend of his, a guitarist called Scratch from New Zealand, are running music nights every Monday there. The evenings kick off at around eight o'clock, with Brian and Scratch playing a set, usually joined by guest musicians such as Mark Pickup on saxophone, then the floor is open to any musicians in the audience. If you have a talent, come along. If, like me, you don't have a talent but enjoy listening to good music, come along as well.

Cry No More are playing as part of the first
ever Hampton Hill Summer Festival, which takes
place on Saturday 17 July in Hampton Hill High Street.

Starts at 12, ends at 7.00. CNM are due onstage
at about 4pm in the courtyard of The Mews, 53
High Street, helping to raise money for the
Shooting Stars charity, playing for about 45 minutes.

The Mayor and Mayoress and local M.P., Vince
Cable will open the festival at 12pm outside the
Farmers' City Market. They will be joined by
Whitton's Town Crier, plus children's characters
including Tinky Winky and Dipsy from the
Teletubbies plus Phil the Frog and Dave the Bear.

It's amazing to think that this has been going on

News of another Cry No More gig and some Bad Influence dates featuring our own Chas Cronk

Another Cry No More gig

The Shooting Star trust have arranged a charity gig on Sat 17th July at the mews off Hampton Hill High St where the Shooting star offices are. It runs between 12:00 lunch time to 18:00 with a few "acts" planned to appear. Running order not yet defined, but one of the acts will be Cry No More. It is part of an overall Hampton Hill event, so there may be other things to do locally.

There's a very good Rhythm and Blues band called Bad Influence, who sometimes find them selves without a bassist. When that happens they often uses the services of Bob Skeats from Wishbone Ash or of Chas Cronk.

AN EVENING WITH RICK WAKEMAN - 16 JULY - BATH ABBEY

Bath Abbey Concert Series is delighted to announce that the legendary rock pianist, Rick Wakeman, will be performing his one-man show in the Abbey on Friday 16 July.

According to my info, his one-man show pretty much came about by accident. Quite simply, his gear didn't arrive for a show one night and all there was available was a piano. The audience were given the choice of their money back or an evening with Rick performing on the piano and telling funny anecdotes. Only three people took up the offer of their money back, and An Evening With Rick Wakeman was born! These performances don't happen very often, which is why each one is very special to Rick, and hopefully to the audience as well.

The show takes place in Bath Abbey on Friday 16 July at 7.30pm. Tickets, costing £25, £20 & £15, are available from Bath Festivals Box Office by calling 01225 463362 or by visiting their website www.bathfestivals.org.uk

Due for release on 14 June: the expanded collector's edition of the Strawbs' very first abum, recorded with Sandy Denny in Copenhagen in 1967. The lavishly illustrated packaging includes extracts from Dave Cousins' diary of the time and never before seen pictures of Sandy.

The master tapes have been remastered by Chris Tsangarides and sound fantastic, bringing out elements of the music we've never heard before on either the old Pickwick release in 1973 or the Hannibal release (Sandy And The Strawbs).

And there are various demos and outtakes from the period, including two Dave Cousins songs "Indian Summer" and "The Falling Leaves" which have never before seen the light of day, and a version of "Pieces of 79 and 15" with a Cousins lead vocal.

The set is lavishly packaged and features all new artwork. News in that Universal are putting together a major compilation of live tracks from BBC sessions/live appearances. No details yet of timing, number of CDs and price, but given the amount of material it's going to be a biggie.

Volume 1 (In Session) features sessions tracks from 60s and 70s shows Top Gear, Sounds Of The Seventies etc. Volume 2 ("In Concert") comprises three hour long concerts broadcast by the BBC in 1971 (Wakeman's last show with Strawbs), 1973 (BATS line-up) and 1974 (Hero And Heroine line-up).

AT LAST - THE STRAWBERRY FOOLS LIVE
====================================

And finally, having sorrowfully missed the opportunity to play at the "big 40th gig" last year, at last the Fools are getting themselves ready for their first full scale gig(s).

Two shows are planned:

Fri 14 May - Aldermaston Village Hall
Sat 15 May - venue to be confirmed, but somewhere near the Twickenham/Teddington/Feltham area

The first night will be a more relaxed affair, the venue does not have a bar, but allows "bring your own" and there's a pub just down the road.

The second will have some special guests (to be announced) and feature some numbers that won't be played on the previous night.

Ticket prices are likely to be £5 and £7 (or £10 for both nights) to help cover our costs.

FRED WEDLOCK

I have just received the very sad news from Dave Cousins, that Fred Wedlock died today following a heart attack.

Those of us who attended the 40th anniversary really enjoyed Fred's role as compere, and the set of his own material he gave us on Sunday morning, including his classic hit "The Oldest Swinger In Town".

A huge comic talent, and an all round thoroughly nice guy, I know those fans who were at the show and those who have seen Fred in the past during his long and successful career, would want to pass on their condolences to Fred's family.

Dave Cousins later commented:

At the end of January I did a gig with Ian Cutler in Trowbridge at the Village Pump. Before we went on Fred Wedlock did a few songs.

After the show we went and had a curry next door, just like the old days. Fred was in great form and we reminisced about the fact that we first met in Bath at the Lansdown Club over 40 years ago.

Last week I had the sad news that Fred had died from a heart seizure. No-one had a bigger heart than Fred so it must have been a serious one.

In the early 1980s I became Programme Controller of Radio Tees. Fred gave me a copy of his new album and asked if I could give it a spin. I got the morning show presenter to play 'The Oldest Swinger In Town'. It was the first time it was ever played on radio anywhere. The reaction was immediate – people phoning in asking where they could buy it. I called his manager. A few weeks later it came out as a single and hit the charts. By way of thanks, Fred presented me with a silver disc celebrating 250,000 sales, a bottle of whisky, and a bottle of gin.

The disc hangs proudly on my office wall. The contents of the bottles hang proudly round my waistline.

"Due to the continuing adverse weather conditions, Roy & I have decided that we will have to cancel tomorrow night's gig and reschedule it as soon as possible. He is virtually snowed in where he is in Kent & with heavy snow still falling there & forecast to for some while, he has doubts as to whether he could actually make it himself.

The forecast for West London is not good either, having changed overnight from light flurries to (more) heavy snow today.

We are very worried for people who would have to travel from afar, as roads and rail links are suffering further disruption today with no let up in sight.

We sincerely regret any inconvenience this may cause anyone, but feel it is the only sensible thing to do.

A new date will be arranged asap for the earliest available Friday."

Rick Wakeman has written a sequel to his book "Grumpy Old Rock Star", called "Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star". He claims it contains all the stories his lawyers said he couldn't tell last time. Apparently he is reminiscing about times past when rock stars were horrible drunken louts making the likes of Jeremy Clarkson look like one of those cuddly meercats with the cute faces.

He is appearing at the Electric Theatre, Guildford on Friday 23rd October at 8:30pm, to read extracts of it, (violinists falling out of trees, playing golf with kangaroos, and being mauled on live TV by a German Shepherd (a dog I hope)), see www.guildfordbookfestival.co.uk for details.

ROBERT KIRBY

Very sorry indeed to have pass on the news I've just had from his closest friend Geoff James, that Robert died yesterday (Saturday 3rd Oct).

Difficult to believe it's only three weeks ago that Robert conducted the Royal Artillery Band through his arrangements for the Acoustic Strawbs' "Evergreen", John Ford's "Heavy Disguise" and the full band's "River/Down By The Sea" and the magnificent "Where Silent Shadows Fall", which had many fans in tears as the grand finale of an emotional weekend-long celebration of Strawbs' 40th anniversary.

I met him on a number of occasions, and he was always the nicest of men, approachable, amusing and self-effacing. Whilst we Strawbs fans know him for his contributions to Strawbs and Dave Cousins albums, both arranging and playing, he was well known outside our world for his contributions to Nick Drake's fantastic albums, underrrated when released, but these days quote as an influence far and wide. He has contributed to artist as wide ranging as The Magic Numbers to Vashti Bunyan, Paul Weller to Roger McGough. See the list at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Kirby.

2. Palace Theatre, Southend - gig with Acoustic Strawbs is on 9th October not 8th as previously - other artists playing on the bill that night are Curved Air and Stackridge.

(Focus and Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash appear at the Palace Theatre without Acoustic Strawbs the night before on 8th Oct, and are at the Cressett in Peterborough, without Acoustic Strawbs, on 9th Oct.)

3. On Friday 16th October, Acoustic Strawbs play a solo gig at the Lamplight Arts Centre, Stanley Co. Durham.

Unfortunately I have now had confirmation that the Strawbs, along
with a large number of other bands have pulled out of this festival,
which has now been completely cancelled.

The festival organisers have apparently undertaken to provide refunds
for tickets purchased - I'm sorry I don't have details of how to
obtain these refunds - you'll need to check with your ticket
agency/the box office etc. where you bought them.

LIMITED NUMBERS AND TICKET PRICES

There is a limit on the number of people who can attend (imposed by the venue capacity) approx 400 including artist guests.

We are only releasing full weekend tickets at first - price for a weekend ticket is £72.

If there is space available, then 1 day tickets for Saturday or Sunday only may be made available later on priced at £42 for each day. If we sell out of weekend tickets, then day tickets will not be made available.


E-TICKETS

We are going to use an e-ticketing process. You will get a voucher with a voucher number e-mailed to you, which can be exchanged for armbands for the number of tickets you have bought when you get to the venue.

YOU WILL NEED TO BRING TO THE VENUE EITHER A PRINTOUT OF THE VOUCHER E-MAIL OR THE PRINTED VOUCHER IF YOU BUY BY POST

PARKING - There is plenty of free parking at Twickenham for those who need it. The car park is off Rugby Road at the north end of Twickenham Stadium - follow signs for Main Car Park. Cars can be left overnight at your own risk.

BAR/CASH MACHINE - Don't worry, there is a bar associated with the venue and a cash machine very close at hand in case you run out of beer vouchers!

Zeus features Dave Lambert along with Tom Leary (Feast Of Fiddles) Graeme Taylor (Gryphon/John Tams Band/Albion Band/Home Service/John Kirkpatrick Band/Rolf Harris Band etc.) and Jon Davie (Gryphon/Home Service/John Williams etc).

According to a recent interview with DL, this should be a bit "different", as they were hoping to use traditional folky instruments but be looking to achieve something different from a traditional folky sound.

Rick Wakeman is playing two open air evening concerts at Hampton Court Palace on 1st and 2nd May and the Acoustic Strawbs will be supporting on both nights. The electric band are also headlining at the Folk On The Pier Festival at Cromer, Norfolk on Friday 8th May. It's an all day event, starting at 2pm, with Strawbs on at 9.30pm.

Strawbs have now completed their EXTREMELY well received Canadian tour with new keyboard player Oliver Wakeman and anticipation is mounting over here in the UK for the forthcoming May tour.

More big news - the new album to be recorded shortly by this line-up; the DVD of the making of BHB and the forthcoming Dave Cousins lyrics book.

We expect more news/information will begin emerging about the 40th anniversary weekend in April. Watch this space.

PAUL BRETT'S SAGE & FIRE - FORTHCOMING CD RELEASES ON ESOTERIC RECORDS

All three albums released by Paul Brett's Sage (Paul Brett Sage, Jubilation Foundry and Schizophrenia) are due for release on CD by Esoteric Recordings (an imprint of the Cherry Red Records group) at the end of March. Bob Voice and Dick Dufall (previously members of Fire) played drums and bass respectively on the albums, and Schizophrenia has guest contributions from Dave Lambert and Rod Coombes. The releases will make the entire Paul Brett's Sage catalogue available on CD in the UK for the first time.

The original recording of the classic "fairytale opera" The Magic Shoemaker by Fire is also due to be reissued on CD by Esoteric Recordings at the end of April.

The albums may be pre-ordered direct from Esoteric at www.esotericrecordings.com and will also be widely available from normal sources.

And ... our own Lindsay Sorrell, prolific contributor to Witchwood and Strawbsweb, has written the sleevenotes !!

STRAWBERRY FOOLS - THE BOOF BOOF SONG

The Strawberry Fools have recently been rehearsing in the depths of the East Yorkshire countryside at a secret location jealously protected by our management ;-)

On the first night we put aside all Strawberry-flavoured items and wrote and recorded a single in support of UK charity Comic Relief's Red Nose Day (slogan: "do something funny for money").

The words were mostly supplied by the public in exchange for a donation to Comic Relief, then compiled/adapted/supplemented after several lethal Bacardis/cans of Stella etc., so there is some pretty surreal material in there.

I am delighted to announce that there will be a Strawbs 40th Anniversary Weekend event, to take place in the UK on Sat/Sun 12/13 September 2009. There's a nice connection with Strawberry Hill House Trust who will receive a donation from the proceeds of the weekend.

Whilst details are being finalised as to who will appear, we wanted to get the date in your diaries as soon as possible so that you can think about travel plans.

We expect to be able to announce more details shortly. As with the 30th anniversary celebrations at Chiswick House, we expect various Strawbs line-ups will perform, and there'll be related band/artist appearances. We hope there'll be some really big surprises.....

Attendance will be limited. Weekend tickets only will be available: prices to be announced - I expect the weekend ticket price to be around 80-85 GBP.

There's a Marriott Hotel associated with the venue which some visitors may wish to stay at: we may be able to facilitate a reduced room rate. We'll let you have details of other possible hotels in the area.

It is intended that the whole weekend will be filmed/recorded for audio and video release in 2010. But we think you'll want to be there in person! As will a certain collection Fools who will be performing at this extravaganza !

To forestall any smart**** questions as to why the 40th anniversary is 11 years after Chiswick: the anniversary we are celebrating is the 40th anniversary of the release of Strawbs first album in 1969. That's our story and we're sticking to it.

Wednesday's a good day to visit the Festival as it's not too busy, and I think there'll be a strong Strawbs fan contingent there to meet up as there was a couple of years ago. Strawbs plus exotic beers - how could anyone resist ?

There's an excellent four page spread all about Fire in the Jan/Feb copy
of Shindig! magazine - currently available in the UK at most branches of W H Smiths and various other outlets.
The Shindig! website is at http://www.shindig-magazine.com/ and details of where to how/where to buy outside the UK are also given.

Not only have Fire got their own four page spread, but there's also a four page
article about Apple Publishing, with several more mentions of Dave
Lambert, his involvement with Fire and Strawbs, various quotes from him etc.

And yet more..."Father's Name is Dad" is also listed first in the "Top ten stunners
from the Apple Publishing catalogue", with mention made of The Pet
Shop Boys sampling the song in 2005.

ACOUSTIC STRAWBS/DAVE COUSINS - ISLE OF WIGHT GIGS OFF
======================================================

The two shows previously advertised at the Quay Arts Centre on 8 Feb (Acoustic Strawbs) and 9 Feb (Dave Cousins solo) are not taking place. Whilst signed contracts were received by the Acoustics/DC, it appears that the promoter has not been able to secure the venue.

UK GOVERNMENT MAKES LIVE MUSIC EVEN MORE DIFFICULT
==================================================

News from Dave Cousins of another piece of proposed legislation that will adversely affect live music in the UK.

It appears that the government wish to introduce laws insisting anyone applying or re-applying for an entertainment license must have a noise control device fitted to the venue. This will be the final NAIL for ALL entertainment in the UK as the level at which these devices off is dreadfully low. In a blog in November about this the proposed level mentioned then was 70Db, about the same as a hair dryer.

Someone has organised a petition on the Government Petition Site. We urge all UK Strawbs fans to sign it (it's for Brititsh citizens only). Not only will this law affect musicians but the whole musical instrument industry, fans, venues.......

The release dates for both The Monks' "Suspended Animation" and High
Society's "I Never Go Out In The Rain" have been delayed until 26th
January by Angel Air Records, following recent difficulties with the original UK distributors.

The albums will still be released on 12th January elsewhere however.

SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII LIVE
========================

In 1972, Rick Wakeman, the keyboard player with the supergroup Yes, released one of the most iconic albums of all time, The Six Wives of Henry VIII. album was a massive success all over the world and to date has sold more than 15,000,000 copies on both vinyl and CD.

Amazingly, the music has never been performed in its entirety but all that is about to change. On 1 and 2 May, The Six Wives of Henry VIII will be performed in spectacular style on HamptonCourtPalace's West Front, to a limited audience of 5000 for each performance.

On stage, performing with Rick, will be an expanded band, The English Chamber Choir, an orchestra and a guest narrator. There will also be dancers and side film screens.

In addition to The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Rick has also composed three additional pieces to perform that evening; Tudor Overture, Defender of the Faith and Tudor Rock.

The whole event will be a 'mock rock Tudor experience' from the outset with a variation of tickets available, such as Platinum tickets which give access to Hampton Court Palace itself from 3.30pm and includes meet and greet and other special opportunities throughout the day.

These will be the only performances of The Six Wives of Henry VIII anywhere in their entirety. Don't miss your chance to be a part of this unique and spectacular event.
