STRAWBSWEBNEWS - NOVEMBER 2012

Sent by Dick Greener, 1 Nov 2012

Hi all -

Hope all our friends over on the US eastern seaboard are well after the traumatic events of the last few days, courtesy of the Sandy we DON'T like being associated with Strawbs. We've heard news that John Ford and Jill are fine and are coping with the disruption, and various other Strawbs fans in the area have been in touch via Witchwood.

A long break since the last mailing - I've been away on holiday in the US, and had to catch up with work when I got back. So I'm afraid I didn't get chance to finish this in time to go out in October.

Thanks to all those who sent in a bumper crop of pictures and reviews from the Canadian Acoustic shows - really much appreciated.

Big news of course is the line-up for the upcoming UK electric tour, see below. Also a new single from Craig & Willoughby and a new boxed set from that other Sandy.

And a little reminder that Lay Down was released 40 years ago this month .... a piece of history!

ELECTRIC STRAWBS - UK TOUR, NOV 2012
====================================

LINE-UP
-------

And now with the Canadian jaunt at an end, our guys getting out just before Hurricane Dandy struck the Eastern seaboard, focus turns to the imminent UK tour with the electric line-up.

The front line is of course the DAVE COUSINS, DAVE LAMBERT & CHAS CRONK core of the the band.

Keys
----

Already announced on keyboards is the fabulous ADAM WAKEMAN, who needs little introduction to Strawbs fans, for obvious reasons. (Is Strawbs the only band in the world where three members of the same family have been keyboard players at different times ?)

Adam was born in 1974 and started playing classical piano at the age of eight. Much of his early touring was with his father Rick Wakeman in the UK, Europe, Russia, South America, and the USA and Canada. He played with the band in 1998 at the Chiswick 30th anniversary bash, and then filled in for Blue Weaver in 2000 and 2001.

At the age of 24 Adam won the award as "Best New Talent" in America's 'Keyboard Magazine'. He is currently in his eighth year as keyboard player with the Ozzy Osbourne band. He has recently toured with Black Sabbath and Slash and Friends, and has also recorded and toured with Annie Lennox. Most recent project is Headspace, a progerssive band project including Damien Wilson, which released I Am Anonymous this year. Check out Adam's site:

http://www.adamwakeman.co.uk/

Drums
-----

On drums and percussion is ADAM FALKNER who plays with the highly rated indie band One EskimO which has toured extensively in the USA for the past two years. Adam is also the Musical Director for Amy Macdonald.

For a sneak preview of Adam F's playing, see "Kandi" by One EskimO on YouTube (plenty more besides):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_tBHoRaxns

"Kandi" was the band's debut single in 2010 with 6-week No. 1 spot on the AAA charts, receiving the Song of the Year 2010 AAA Music Award.

Also, check out his website:

Please welcome the two Adams - looks like an exciting tour.

We've recorded an interview with Merseyside's Morning Show presenter Sean Styles for broadcast this week. Allan Watkiss did a wonderful piece on the song on his BBC Radio Sheffield show on Sunday. All help greatly appreciated!"

SANDY DENNY BOXED SET
=====================

For those who missed out on the original 19CD limited edition boxed set (which now goes up for silly money on Ebay), Universal release a 4CD cut down version, called "The Notes And The Words", which includes the early demo recording of "Who Knows Where The Time Goes".

Info at:
http://www.sandydennyofficial.com/the-notes-and-the-words-a-collection-of-demos-and-rarities/

And there are various competions going on in various places where you can win the 19cds and book from the original box (clearly Uuniversal had one left with a damaged box!).

LAY DOWN 40TH
=============

And, finally: 40 years ago saw the release of the game-changing Strawbs single "Lay Down", which has been a constant feature since it hit the charts in late 1972. The first Strawbs record I ever bought at age 13 - the first step in a lifelong musical obsession with Strawbs' music. Released in many other countries as well,it reached number 12 in the official British charts.

Timeline:
---------

13 Oct - Release of Lay Down

4 Nov - Chart position: 34

11 Nov - Chart position: 31

16 Nov - First appearance on Top Of The Pops, alongside other acts including Slade (with "Gudbuy To Love"), the Osmonds (with "Crazy Horses") and the mawkish "Clair" by Gilbert O'Sullivan. Full details at Popscene:
