MM review by Eric Winter of Troubadour gig
Sometimes you're so close to history being made you can smell it. Last Saturday at the Troubadour, London's oldest folk club, the air was full of history.
The featured performers were the Strawberry Hill Boys - Dave Cousins whose banjo has been ringing expertly round the folk scene for some years, John Berry, a sensitive (as opposed to a plonk plonk) bass player, and Tony Hooper on guitar. As they set up a swinging grassroots sound, three country music giants tumbled in - Bill Clifton, respected as well as loved for his authoritative work in the bluegrass field; Eric Weissberg, sometime of the Tarriers and lately in Britain to accompany Judy Collins; and Pete Roberts of the Country Gentlemen. ...
The visitors soon went into ad hoc rehearsal with the Strawberry Hill Boys and emerged to produce an astonishing sound on such high flying numbers as 'Mary Dear' and 'The Little Whitewashed Chimney' not to mention such standards as 'Salty Dog' and 'There Ain't Nobody Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone'" DG Wed 30 Mar 1966 Red Lion, Barking DC/DG Sun 3 Apr 1966 Hoxton Hall, Shoreditch
MM: "Another great folk song and dance evening with the Strawberry Hill Boys, The Fielders & IIDA, with Ray Goulding to lead the dancing from 8. A real Victorian music hall, well worth the journey."

Vietnam show at St. Pancras Town Hall: Julie Felix, Bert Jansch, Alexis Corner, Trevor Lucas, Tom Paley, Sandy Denny
MM piece read: "Sandy Denny has the sort of rich soaring voice that could make her a British Baez, though the comparison does her an injustice. .... A recent Folksong Cellar appearance and club dates all over the country is followed by her big chance in this Sunday's Vietnam concert in which she appears on the same bill as Britain's top-drawing female folk-singer ... Julie Felix."

WB - Banjo's 50th birthday
SHB's Karl Dallas wrote in MM: "Dave Cousins' banjo celebrates its 50th birthday tonight at the Strawbs' grand Christmas binge at their club at the White Bear, Hounslow. All other banjos are invited to join the festivities.
The Strawbs recently notched up their 30th BBC radio show with an appearance on Cavalcade with the BBC Concert Orchestra."
DG: This seems to be the first written reference to "Strawbs," though the MM ad still read "Strawberry Hill Boys". Strawbs
